Neil Diamond - Greatest Musician of all time?

We’ve come to accept that the music industry treats our ear canals as their own personal toilet. Talent doesn’t come into question, nowadays, when signing an aspiring musician, all that is necessary is striking good looks in order to convince the easily manipulated amongst you that this hot new popstar actually wants to make love to your face…but only if you buy their CD. (I’m not thinking of anybody in particular whilst making such disparaging remarks, Justin Bieber) but to whomever may fit this category I’m about to school you on a true living legend, a musical behemoth, an insatiable lovemachine (just a guess but I mean, come on, nearly every one of his songs is about a different woman). That man is Neil Diamond.

First of all, how many musicians can you think of that have had a career that spans over 5(!!!) decades? Not many. He has been selling records for 50 years. Let me put that into perspective for you. Thats a bloody long time. To all you 49 year olds out there it’s more than likely that your parents had been made aware of a hip new act on the music scene, listened to his songs, were overcome by the aura of sexuality he exudes, made beautiful love and, lo, your conception!

Secondly, the man has sold a shit load of records. More than 115 million worldwide. Let me also put this into perspective. You would need AT LEAST 11.5 million pairs of hands to count how many records he has sold throughout his career. All this through picking up a guitar and doing what he loves doing. No background effects, no auto-tuning, just him and his guitar.

It depresses me that people are so easily conned into buying albums from the likes of Bieber or the Jonas Brothers, despite such an obvious lack of talent. Whereas, tell a person to listen to Neil Diamond and 9 times out of 10 they look at you like you are mad for considering it, just dismissing half a bloody century of music making, just because he doesn’t wear hipsters or change his hair every week or simply because he is an old man.

We live in a world full of songs with such banal subject matter being forced upon us. I recall one girl sang about the day of the week for a few minutes and became an internet sensation. Rihanna, one of the most famous artists in the world, has released songs about an umbrella and a bed. Gone are the days where songs about blue jeans are just not considered to be saleable. *sigh*

Anyways, I’m all for being schooled in good music too so let’s consider this a culture swap. I’ll take suggestions too. (Just no Bieber, Jonas Brothers etc etc.)

Trisha L - Couldn't have said it better myself.  No one can shine Neil's shoes let alone his talent.  Justin Bieber has a long way to go to catch up w/Neil.  In my opinion - I don't think he'll ever make it!  Don't care for him much at all - just a spoiled kid and has a lot to learn.

Yes JB is just flavour of the month, like so many before him.  So few stand the test of time like Neil.  As the article hinted at, artists like Neil have to tolerate being seen as uncool, many thinking he has lost popularity and gone the same way as most others, but he was always hanging in there because so many fans knew he was the real deal.

WTG Trish!!! Excellent perspective & you are completely right!!!! Nix on the Jonas Bros ARG!!! And do you realize that these "so called" musicians have to scream, or have screaming guitars, and do antics not to mention the light show...it is all a cover for the fact that not only do they have no talent, they actually do this knowing only 3-5 different guitar chords...YUP!!! Neil does it everywhich way he can...picked the right backup and his songs are filled with profound musical ability...I keep saying over and over that Neil should actually be "Our Ambassador of Music" as he has touched sooooo many lives on a global level and brought them together!!!! He is the REAL DEAL!!! Wonderful perspective, girl...good girl!!!!!!! GLorygirl oxxo

I didnt write this Gloria!  It was a blog probably, the link to it is under Neil's pic.  Well expressed tho isnt it!

I don't listen to any of todays crap they call music.. I do however like some of Adele's songs.. but other than that I don't listen to any of it. I used to listen to country also but since its became "bubblegum" Country  I don't listen to much of it anymore either.I mean can you see Bieber or GaGa still doing this when they're 70???  PLEEZZZE!! LOL

ROCK ON SWEET DADDY! WE LOVE YA!! =)

"He's just a love machine"!!! LOL

there are many others. Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka, Barbra Strisand, Cher. Just to name a few.

OH-almost forgot Paul McCartney & of course Elvis, who will live on forever.

Thanks for sharing this blog, Trisha.  I agree with it.  There are a few great musical artists out there who will stand the test of time, but for the most part it's just a bunch of junk.  I have listened to Justin B recently and was astonished to discover he sounds like a young Stevie Wonder--but that doesn't mean he'll be around for long if that sound isn't backed up by real talent.  Maybe he'll grow into some--he is just a kid!  But Neil, ahhhh, there's just something extraordinary about him.  We can try to sum it all up but I don't think anyone will ever do that tally justice.  So for now we will just luxuriate in his music and appreciate that we were put here on this earth at the same time he was.  And rejoice!  Hugs!

I agree, it so hard if not impossible for us ordinary mortals to put into words how we feel, and the effect Neil has on us, also there are less obvious knock on effects, like I find myself now more open to meeting a new partner.  This is why its so good that blogs like this, and Suzanne's poetry etc are available to us, they express how we feel better than we can on our own.

Only a few have that something that sets them apart from the rest, and Neil certainly has that something!

The answer to this question is: YES!

For me music is very much important and I listen to quite all kind of music. There are real good melodies and/or lyrics. But there are only very, very few songs I can listen thousands of time and still get goosebumps and being touched in my heart. The performance and the personality of the musician make the difference between good music and this special kind of music.

Neil has this special love energy.
