A Neil Diamond fan community

There are times when I wish I could exchange the ability to make graphics for the ability to play a musical instrument, be good at dancing or sports or be able to creat works of art with the pen rather than a computer and then there are times when I love what I do.

This is not Neil Diamond related as such but it's relevant to this blog post so bear with me whilst I explain the huge joy that my 'artwork' has given me.
It was back in May 2011 and I was bored whilst waiting for a file to download and so I thought I'd make an alternate cover of a single that Meat Loaf, John Rich, Mark McGrath and Lil Jon had released in iTunes for charity. The iTunes artwork was basically a simple silver background with text. About half an hour later I was finished and so I shared the artwork with the Meat Loaf community. I got a lot of compliments from other fans but I wasn't expecting what happened next. I got several emails the next morning telling me that Meat Loaf himself was looking for me on the UK Fanclub and so I went there thinking and worrying about what I had done. It turns out that he too liked my artwork and he wanted to use it in the CD booklet. I was so shocked that I couldn't even write a reply to him straightaway. There was part of me that wasn't going to believe it until I saw it but sure enough, in September when the Australian version of Hell In A Handbasket was released, an edited form of my artwork was in the cover with credit given to me under my name.
I didn't get this through connections or a friend helping me get noticed and I have been told that it was simply the quality of my artwork speaking for itself and catching Meat Loaf's eye. It made me realise that after seven years of teaching myself Photoshop, I may have finally got somewhere and that, like it or not, this was what I was good at.

Speaking of artwork, I will have a new Neil Diamond desktop for you all very soon.

Hey there...I really enjoyed this story. You see I am a professional pianist...all my adult life & music comes so easy for me & have won many honors...however, I would give anything to be great at graphic arts & am teaching myself that as you did with Photoshop. So it is interesting that you once wished you were a musician & I wished I were better at graphics. Congratulations on your success. Regards, Gloria (Glorygirl)

There was a report on The One Show today about a singer who has made progress by doing things herself, she makes her own covers for her CDs, does very imaginative you tubes to go with her songs, books unusual places to perform and invites her followers from her facebook page, etc.  The point of this is that we are going thru such a sea change in the way music is produced, the old system of being controlled by record companies and being dropped by them is on its way out. Artists can now have so much more freedom.

This is such a significant change and I dont think it will ever be as it used to be again.  You benefited amazingly from putting your work on line, a lot of other people with your talent are now going to be able to express it without having to wait to be taken on by record companies - all to the good I would say!
